DACHSER UK and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport join forces to promote careers in logistics to school leavers

Northampton, UK: 13 May 2008 - The Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics (CILT) recently joined forces with global logistics services provider DACHSER UK in a joint effort to promote transport and logistics as a career choice for young people.

DACHSER UK plans to recruit at least two school-leavers in 2008 to embark on a one-year training programme, prior to being placed in a division or department suitable to their interest, ability and aspirations.

The ‘Moving on Up’ careers forum, was held on March 28th at the University of Northampton’s Moulton Park campus, organised by Northamptonshire EBLO (Educational Business Link Organisation). This event provided the opportunity for 16 - 18 year-old A-level students from the county’s schools to find out more about various career options open to them.

‘We saw a lot of interest from students who wanted to learn more about the logistics industry in general as well as about DACHSER in particular’, commented Nick Lowe, DACHSER UK’s Managing Director. ‘This is great for us because our business is growing substantially and we have a need to recruit young, motivated people to help us in supporting our development plans, as part of our overall recruitment strategy.’

CILT’s goal is to have transport and logistics included as a subject which can be studied alongside the Government’s Diploma scheme, which will begin to run in parallel with GCSEs from 2010.

“Although transport and logistics provides the life blood of any modern economy, and is the 5th largest business sector in the UK, in educational terms it remains practically invisible, and is not regarded as a career choice by most students”, comments Sarah Skinns of CILT. “Our aim is to raise awareness of our sector in schools, and to set it on an equal footing with other subjects in the school curriculum. Drawing on the practical experience of DACHSER UK and other logistics companies is an excellent way to pursue this goal.”

“Logistics can provide a really exciting, enjoyable career opportunity; it’s a very dynamic and varied industry, and an increasingly important part of the UK economy”, said David Farmer, DACHSER UK’s Commercial Logistics Manager. John Goodman, General Manager, Northampton, added: “Students with educational backgrounds in Languages, Maths, Business Studies and/or Economics should have the necessary skills that we are looking for”.

CILT will continue to work with logistics companies such as DACHSER UK, in a series of careers forums throughout the country. CILT will be involved in a further series of workshops for employers in the logistics industries to inform them of the new 14-19 curriculum.

These events are part of a broader strategy by CILT to encourage pupils to consider transport and logistics seriously as a career option. CILT is the professional body representing the whole transport and logistics sector, and is an awarding body with sector specific qualifications. CILT’s Level 2 qualification in transport and logistics is now accredited by the Government’s Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) for the- 18 age group enabling schools to include it in option choices and gain funding for delivering the qualification.
